SFSU Fine Arts Gallery presents ::
California Calligraphy Summit
Opening Reception Sept. 23, 2-4 pm
Fine Arts Building 238, San Francisco State University

--

The California Calligraphy Summit brings together the work of a dozen artists who are now or have been based in California, for whom calligraphy is central to their artistic exploration. Diverse international and culturally complex written languages inform their inventively experimental work, ranging from abstract to literary, classic to "street." Several of the artists are already acclaimed abroad, while others are just beginning to attract art world attention for their exciting approaches. This fascinating and multilingual exhibition shows how some of the best art in California ties to the world. Exhibiting artists are Tauba Auerbach, Chen Chi-kwan, Catherine Courtenaye, Ala Ebtekar, Fu Chuan-fu, Wosene Worke Kosrof, Stella Lai, Isaac Lin, John McKenzie, Kazuaki Tanahashi, Mohamed Zakariya, and Faye Zhang.

Admission is free and open to all ages.

More information on the artists, images, and goodies can be found at www.sfsu.edu/~gallery, and at www.myspace.com/sfsufineartsgallery.

Opening Reception: Sat, Sept 23, 2-4 pm, featuring artist Wosene Worke Kosrof in conversation with curator Lizzetta LeFalle-Collins at 3 pm.

Exhibit runs through October 19.

...full of self-centered, egotistical cocksuckers. Sorry, Junior year blues. Had to vent. Does anyone have a remedy for this? How do you deal with narrow-minded fascists like Linda Connor? How do you deal with the scowls and grunts and castration? With the endlessy inane conceptual bullshit? With nauseating, cold-blooded critiques? With an ever-dwindling budget? What do you say about a 20-by-24 print of someone's erect penis, or close-ups of a girl's hairy vagina covered in chicken fat? Am I in the fucking twilight zone or what? To all you alumni: Help, please? Am i wasting my time and energy? Or will this insanity actually be worth it some day?

Ilford suffers

Snagged this news from another tribe:

Digital revolution threatens Ilford jobs

Terry Macalister
Tuesday August 24, 2004
The Guardian

The British arm of Ilford, one of the most famous names in black-and-white photography, has been forced into administration.

Over 740 jobs at the company's huge plant in Cheshire are in danger following a slump in demand in favour of digital and colour equipment.

The company was formed 125 years ago by Alfred Harman making gelatine dry plates in the basement of his house in Ilford, Essex.

In recent years it has been through a variety of owners, and is controlled by private equity firm, Doughty Hanson.

Ilford Imaging has two manufacturing companies - one at Mobberley in Cheshire and the other at Marly in Switzerland.

The Swiss operation - a legacy of when Ilford was owned by Ciba Geigy - develops and manufactures digital inkjet products. It is not affected by any form of insolvency and is trading normally. A further 310 Ilford staff are employed in marketing and distribution businesses in America, Europe and Australia.

The US has traditionally been the biggest market for the monochrome films and developing paper produced by Ilford in Britain.

Mark Byers, one of the partners from Grant Thornton appointed as a joint administrator, said the next step would be to try to restructure Ilford in the hope it could be made viable for sale. He said it was "not inevitable" that this would involve job losses but admitted cuts were possible as costs would have to be taken out of the business.

Mr Byers said the pension situation appeared positive for the staff with no signs of deficits.

"It's important [for the employees] not to get spooked. Our understanding is that these defined-benefit schemes are fine," he said yesterday.

Ilford has spent the past four years trying to adjust to falling sales of black-and-white equipment.

The company claims to hold 60% of the global market but overall volumes have been falling and were down 18% last year.

Mr Byers said the figures for the first seven months of 2004 showed the overall market shrinking by 26%. "This left the [Ilford] operation badly exposed," he said.

Despite this, Ilford, which reports in dollars, has managed to increase overall sales volumes to $233m for the 12 months to December 2003.

Doughty Hanson - recently involved in the float of the Umbro sports clothing business - is understood to have tried to sell Ilford quite recently but failed to find a buyer. The private equity firm was unavailable for comment.

The fate of the Ilford operation was not recorded on the company website, which boasted only of its long and successful history. "The efficiency of our plants in the UK and Switzerland - and the award-winning products they constantly develop are the envy of the industry," it said.

Despite the problems, Mr Byers insists the Ilford name is a significant brand, with a particular following among professional and keen amateur photographers who prefer the artistry of monochrome pictures.

Ironically the Ilford business is threatened just weeks after the death of Henri Cartier Bresson, a key exponent of black-and-white photography.

Have you been working on a canvas that just seems doomed? Are you so sick of it that you would like to get rid of it? Don't throw it in the dumpster at SFAI, recycle it by giving it to me (or trade or a few bucks) and I will recycle it into my own work as collage materials. Of course I would NEVER use your composition, but the color areas and rough spots on the canvas make a great material for me to cut up and revitalize into new works of art.

Your trash is art material to me. I will pick it up anywhere in the city of SF and bring you a frosty beer when I do.

Thanks,

DC

800 Chestnut and 3rd Street? What are the best MUNI routes to get back & forth? I see the #15 bus. I'm stuck on transporting supplies. My 2-week intensive begins 6/2 @ the main campus, my gear is going to 3rd street. We're talking 60+ pounds of gear! How can I easily get from one spot to the other? If it helps any, I'm staying @ Taylor & Sutter, so if a route through here is an option, feel free to mention it.

American Terrorists Threaten the Artists

Local art gallery closed because of terror threats - I thought I lived in liberal San Francisco, but the blind patriots are taking over free-speech. Instead of pointing criticism at the military for torturing prisoners, they aim their hate and rage at artists.

So I'll be coming in from Chicago for a summer program and want to know how anyone else from out of state deals with sending work out at the end of the term. Is there a FedEx nearby, do you bubble wrap, drive, throw it all away?
Likewise for all your unused materials- canvas, paints, stapleguns. Are you given storage space to hold this for the inactive terms?

*Ahem*

I'm getting ready to come out to SFAI for the Summe rTerm, June through mid-August, and want to find a decent sublet in the Russian/Telegraph Hill/ Pac Hts, North Beach Area.
As a person who has spent 30 years in Chicago and with few connections out there, I'm looking for assistance in locating a studio or 1BR place. I don't have a car, and don't want to care for pets. I'll water plants and bring in your mail, that's totally doable.
This is work-related, not a vacation so that should make it clear that I'm responsible and serious about finding a good place. Should you have a lead, please fire off an email in my direction.

Thanks in advance,

Derek

Sam Tchakalian -- gifted abstract painter, teacher

Jesse Hamlin, Chronicle Staff Writer Saturday, January 24, 2004

Sam Tchakalian, a San Francisco artist and teacher admired for his forceful abstract paintings and revered for his passion and honesty, died Wednesday in San Francisco of complications from diabetes and leukemia. He was 75.

Mr. Tchakalian was an unwavering abstractionist best known for the big paintings he made with thick bands of color brushed or dragged with a trowel across the canvas. They had an elemental power and vitality.

"They have an immediacy, presence and an authenticity which is so lacking nowadays,'' said painter Squeak Carnwath who teaches at UC Berkeley.

"Sam's paintings were aggressive and gentle simultaneously," said Carnwath. "I liked their physicality, the generosity of the paint handling. They were in the heroic Abstract Expressionist mode, in a great, stubborn way. '' Carnwath sees suggestions of landscape in some of Mr. Tchakalian's work and likened the experience of looking at Mr. Tchakalian's big paintings to the meditative state induced by the bands of color in certain Buddhist paintings.

Bruce Conner, a San Francisco artist who came to prominence during the Beat era, called Mr. Tchakalian "one of the major lights of Bay Area Abstract Expressionist painting in the 1950s and '60s" who used mixed media at a time when other painters didn't. "And he was always a fun guy to be around,'' Conner added.

Mr. Tchakalian was born in Shanghai in 1929 and moved with his family to San Francisco after World War II. He served in the U.S. Army and received a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master of fine arts degree from San Francisco State.

He lived in and painted in the same Duboce Street studio since 1957 and taught at the San Francisco Art Institute for 35 years, retiring in 2001.

"He was a beloved teacher,'' said Carnwath, noting that Mr. Tchakalian had a reputation as a committed teacher who didn't pull his punches when it came to assessing students' work. "He could be harsh during critiques, but people learned a lot and loved it. He was in there duking it out.''

Mr. Tchakalian's work was exhibited widely in the Bay Area and is in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Oakland Museum and the Fine Arts Museums' Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts.

Since 1985, he was represented by San Francisco's Modernism gallery, which is going ahead with plans for a large exhibition of Mr. Tchakalian's work in 2005, accompanied by the publication of a book about the painter.

Mr. Tchakalian's body will be on view from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hogan, Sullivan and Bianco Chapel, 1266 9th Ave., and a service for him will be held at noon Tuesday at St. John's Armenian Church, 275 Olympia Way.

Mr. Tchakalian is survived by two brothers, Manuel of San Francisco and Edward of Los Angeles; and a niece and nephew, both of Los Angeles.
